AI Search Visibility basics

What are AI answer engines?

AI answer engines are tools that respond to a question with a synthesized, written answer instead of a list of blue links. Ask one a question and it reads across many sources, decides which to trust, writes a direct answer, and often cites the pages it used. ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, and Google's AI Overviews are the best-known examples.

How they differ from a traditional search engine

A search engine returns a page of links and leaves the reading, comparing, and deciding to you. An answer engine does that work itself and hands back one response. The practical difference for a publisher is stark: in classic search, ranking on page one earns a click; in an answer engine, the engine may answer the question completely and name only a few sources, so the goal shifts from ranking a link to being one of the cited sources.

How an answer engine chooses its sources

Most answer engines work in two broad ways, often combined. Some rely on what the underlying model learned during training, which favors well-established, widely referenced content. Others retrieve live pages at query time and ground the answer in what they just fetched, which is how citations appear. To be picked, your page has to be reachable by their crawlers, clearly answer the question, and read as credible enough to trust.

The engines that matter

  • ChatGPT (OpenAI), which browses and cites live sources for many queries.
  • Claude (Anthropic), used both directly and inside other products.
  • Perplexity, an answer-first engine that cites its sources prominently.
  • Google AI Overviews, the AI answer shown above the traditional results.

Why being in AI answers matters

As more questions are answered directly, the answer itself becomes the destination. Being the source an engine cites builds visibility and trust at the exact moment someone is looking for what you offer, even when they never reach a classic results page. Getting found and cited in those answers is what AI Search Visibility measures, and improving it is what GEO IQ is built to do.

In practice

In one first-hand test, applying the prioritized fixes to a single page improved its AI Search Visibility Score by 37% in 54 minutes. Structure and Semantics went from 48 to a perfect 100, Technical Optimization from 66 to 95, and the page's content type, previously read as "Unknown," was correctly identified.
